Tullie House is the museum of the Border, situated in Carlisle, England. The museum tells 300 years of Border history, including the history of the Reivers. Tullie House is the home of many treasures and exhibits which tell the story of the ancient and once troubled frontier between England and Scotland. The Romans were the first to establish a major frontier across these austere but beautiful hills, rivers, and valleys. Much of this frontier remains to this day in the form of Hadrians wall. At Tullie House you can try your hand at many of the activities undertaken by the Romans. Writing on a wax tablet is not as easy as it sounds, neither is grinding corn, nor sitting on a Roman saddle 1000 years before stirrups were invented. The Reivers display is a graphic illustration of a precarious way of life of the people of the border. It serves as a powerful introduction to a tour of the region both north and south of the National Frontier. Carlisle was a railway town and at one time at least seven different railway companies used to use the station everyday. At Tullie House you can look out at a view of the medieval castle through the window of a first class compartment from the Edwardian days. The age of steam brought prosperity to a city which had suffered it's fair share of poverty, sieges, and lawlessness.
